Call to Worship Tom Loughlin

Leader:  God calls the simple, the weak, the powerless.
People:  God’s weakness is stronger than our strength; God’s foolishness is wiser than our wisdom.
Leader:  God calls the hopeless, the lonely, the lost.
People:  God’s tenderness chooses us in spite of our needs. God’s righteousness saves us in spite of our fears.
Leader:  God calls each of us to the grace of the cross.
All:  God is the source of our life. Alleluia!

Our Father, who art in heaven,
      Hallowed be Thy name.
      Thy kingdom come,
      Thy will be done
On earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread
      And forgive us our debts
      As we forgive our debtors;
And lead us not into temptation,
      But deliver us from evil,
For Thine is the kingdom, and the power,
       and the glory forever.
      Amen

LATE BREAKING ANNOUNCEMENTS
(More announcements are in the monthly newsletter, available in the narthex)

This morning’s prelude, offertory and postlude are from Pierre Du Mage’s Premier Livre du Orgue, which was published in 1708.

Du Mage was an organist in France, and this book of organ pieces was his only published work. The offertory, Tierce en Taille, is a form used often by French Baroque organ composers. The “tierce” refers to a certain combination of stops on the organ:

8’, 4’, 2’, 2 2/3rds’, 1 3/5ths’. An 8’ pipe sounds at the same pitch as is played on the keyboard, whereas a 4’ pipe, being that it’s half the length, sounds an octave higher. The 2’ sounds two octaves higher. And the 2 2/3rds’ and 1 3/5ths’ are what give the tierce its unique sound, because those partials sound at different pitches relative to the fundamental—not at octaves as the 4’ and 2’ do. You will hear the tierce as the solo voice in the offertory piece. The Trio, today’s prelude, is titled so simply because there are three voices sounding together in counterpoint, as if there were three separate instruments playing the piece together. You will hear many ornamented notes in the three Du Mage pieces, as this was the French style of composition during the Baroque period.
