Meditative Reflection
Love is blind, but marriage restores its sight.

Getting married is easy. Staying married is more difficult.
Staying happily married for a lifetime should rank among the fine arts.

Call to Worship Dave Sebastian

Leader:  In the darkness and emptiness of much we call life, the Spirit moves among us, calling us into new being.
People:  We are here to seek light amid the shadows, fulfillment out of hollowness and despair.
Leader:  From separation and bitterness, apathy and hatred, God, in Christ, calls us to steadfast love and reconciliation.
People:  We have come to find healing and peace, to experience forgiveness, acceptance, and purpose.
Leader:  In the midst of the ordinary, God has come to us. In our everyday worlds, God continues to visit and redeem.
All:  Come, Holy Spirit, to baptize us with fire. We await your word.

Our Father, who art in heaven,
      Hallowed be Thy name.
      Thy kingdom come,
      Thy will be done
On earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread
      And forgive us our debts
      As we forgive our debtors;
And lead us not into temptation,
      But deliver us from evil,
For Thine is the kingdom, and the power,
       and the glory forever.
      Amen

Today’s prelude was composed by Johann Christoph Bach (1642-1703), son of Heinrich Bach (J.S. Bach’s great uncle), and uncle of Maria Barbara Bach (J.S. Bach’s first wife). Some of Johann Christoph’s works were originally attributed to J.S. Bach, but recently it has come to light that J.C. Bach was indeed the composer. This morning’s prelude is a fugue--a composition in which each voice enters in turn with the same theme. This is especially complicated to write, because the puzzle must fit together as the voices continue. This morning’s prelude is a small fugue, or a fughette, consisting of only three voices, but is impressive nonetheless.

Today’s postlude was arranged by Diane Bish, one of the most famous organists of our time. She is especially known for her flamboyant style and became popular through her television show, The Joy of Music, which is broadcast to over 300 million people each week. She is originally from Kansas, served as senior organist and artist-in-residence at the Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church in Fort Lauderdale for over 20 years, and now resides in Bloomington, Indiana. If you are interested in learning more about this extraordinary woman, Warren Woodruff’s book Diane Bish: First Lady of the Organ was published in 1993. Her website is www.dianebishtv.com
