Meditative Reflection
Laws are silent amidst the clash of arms.
      Cicero

In peace sons bury fathers but war violates the order of nature
      and fathers bury sons.
      Herodotus

In war there is no such thing as victor and vanquished….
There is only a loser and that loser is humankind.
      U Thant, former Secretary
      General of the United Nations

Ringing of the Church Bell
Prelude Nimrod from Enigma Variations Edward Elgar
Choral Introit O Day of Peace! JERUSALEM
O day of peace that dimly shines through all our hopes and prayers and dreams,
Guide us to justice, truth and love, delivered from our selfish schemes.
May swords of hate fall from our hands, our hearts from envy find release,
Till by God’s grace our warring world shall see Christ’s promised reign of peace.
Call to Worship Terry Baker

People:  From falsehood to truth.

Lord’s Prayer (“debts/debtors”)
Our Father, who art in heaven,
      Hallowed be Thy name.
      Thy kingdom come,
      Thy will be done
On earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread
      And forgive us our debts
      As we forgive our debtors;
And lead us not into temptation,
      But deliver us from evil,
For Thine is the kingdom, and the power,
       and the glory forever. Amen

LATE BREAKING ANNOUNCEMENTS
(More announcements are in the monthly newsletter, available in the narthex)

Here is today’s Sunday school schedule: There will be an Assembly for all children ages 4-12. Youth in grades 6-12 may help with the Assembly or stay in Worship.

This morning’s prelude is the ‘Nimrod’ variation from Sir Edward Elgar’s Variations on an Original Theme (‘Enigma’) Op.36, known usually as “The Enigma Variations”. This is a work for orchestra containing fourteen variations, each dedicated to someone Elgar knew, but the dedications were by code. The ‘Nimrod’ variation was for Elgar’s friend A.J. Jaeger. About the “Enigma Variations” Elgar wrote: “The Enigma I will not explain – its dark saying must be left unguessed … further, through and over the whole set another and larger theme goes, but is not played.” This “other theme,” which may or may not exist, has often been sought but never convincingly found. Elgar’s wife and Jaeger are thought to have been the only people who knew the secret. The ‘Nimrod’ variation is quite beautiful, among Elgar's most impassioned melodies. Each year at the Cenotaph (war memorial) in London this piece is played on Remembrance Sunday, which is the equivalent of our Veterans Day.

Final Concert of the 2007-08 Season - Coffeehouse Concert: The Music and Fine Arts Committee invites you to our second annual Coffeehouse Concert on Saturday, June 7th at 7:30 p.m. in the atrium. This year the concert will feature Katie Flannery (musical theater), Matt Ocone (classical guitar) and Daniel Rufolo (jazz piano). These three grew up in Christ Church and are now embarking on their professional music careers. Tickets are $10/$5 students. Each musician plays a 20-minute set, and in between there will be coffee and snacks for sale. Bring the whole family for a fun evening Any adults or youth who wish to help out the evening of the concert, please contact Holly Chatham. Thank you!

Save Darfur – WRITE NOW Ask Olympic Sponsors to tell China to STOP enabling the Darfur genocide -- The Summit Darfur Genocide Rescue Committee (DGRC) invites you to participate in a letter writing campaign targeting Olympic sponsors. Beginning on May 13, and throughout May and June, we are asking you to ask corporations to get involved – to exercise their considerable influence with China and with the IOC to help bring an end to the vast suffering in Darfur. Participation is easy and will take just a few minutes of your time. Visit www.Summit4Darfur.org for details and to sign up to participate. Thank you for supporting the people of Darfur . . . your voice makes a difference, especially now as the Olympics approach.

Prayer Chain: Layne Weggeland will be taking over the prayer chain this Sunday, May 25. You can contact him at laynew@msn.com.
