This year is the 150th anniversary of the death of the great English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958), who was the most important English composer of his generation, and arguably the greatest English composer since Henry Purcell. This morning’s solo, choir anthem and postlude are all by this great composer.

Vaughan Williams was a key figure in the 20th-century revival of British music. His music is notable for its power, nobility and expressiveness, representing the essence of 'Englishness'. He often used English folk melodies in his music, and indeed collected over 800 folksongs from the countryside of England. During his lifetime of composition, he was also engaged in many other non-musical activities. He served as a wagon orderly and artillery officer during the war with the Royal Army Medical Corps in France and on the Salonika front. Soon after the armistice he was made director of music for the First Army of the British Expeditionary Force, with responsibility for organizing amateur music-making among the troops. His activity on behalf of German refugees led to his music being banned by the Nazis in 1939.

His canon of composition includes nine symphonies, five operas, film music, ballet and stage music, several song cycles, church music and works for chorus and orchestra. When he died, many English music-lovers felt a sense of loss that was personal no less than musical. This ‘extraordinary, ordinary man’ had not only become an institution; he had also reached the hearts of the people. On September 19th, 1958, before a crowded assembly, his ashes were interred in the north choir aisle of Westminster Abbey, near the burial place of Purcell. The first music that was played was Vaughan Williams’ Five Variants of ‘Dives and Lazarus’, on a tune that he had known and loved since 1893. (New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians)

The third white candle on the altar Is lit in hope of world peace.

No matter who you are, or where you are on life's journey, you're welcome here.
